Despite being the best-educated, highest-income earning, and fastest growing racial group in the United States, according to a Pew Research study, Asian American white-collar professionals are the least likely group to be promoted into management and executive positions in the United States. This is likely due to a number of different factors, both external biases and internal characteristics, that interact to make Asian Americans less visible in the workplace, and considered less often for leadership roles than our colleagues of the dominant culture.

- You feel like opportunities for development in your career are missing.
- You produce great work, but your contributions are not being recognized.
- You feel like you're not being seen as a leader, and you're being passed over for promotions.
- You don't see yourself represented in your organization's leadership ranks.
- You're working hard to understand your workplace culture, but haven't been able to crack the code.
- You experience microaggressions in the workplace and aren't sure how to handle them.
- You haven't been able to find a good match for a mentor.
- You feel like you can't be yourself at work and code switching is getting exhausting.

Asian diasporas are diverse, representing over 50 countries and ethnicities. While our life experiences may be quite different, the perspective I bring as an Asian American coach is an understanding of how Asian Americans are perceived, how the model minority myth affects us and works against us in the workplace, and how we as Asian Americans can sometimes get in our own way of reaching our goals.

As a leader, you can “shine your light”, or be a “beacon of light” to communicate your purpose. When you share it with others, it will help them follow you out of a place of darkness or uncertainty – like a lantern. Or it will help them grow – like the sun is for a young sapling.
The intention of “seizing the light” is the idea of actively empowering yourself to find your own values, purpose, and truth. Applying that knowledge allows you to make decisions that resonate with you and move through your life on your own terms.
